It is easy to have a kitchen in mind for bathroom worktop fitting in Longlands and no idea yet what your own walls are going to do to it. Semis and chalet bungalows on the slope down to the Cray valley. Bungalow kitchens are square with low ceilings and sills close to the worktop, while the semis follow the usual rear-kitchen-plus-dining-room plan. Plenty of kitchens do not match either description exactly, which is what the measured survey is there to sort out.
Suspended floors at the front meet a solid slab in the extension somewhere in the middle, and the units sit across the change. The fittings come from four suppliers and arrive in no particular order, so the surface is drawn last and asked to reconcile all of them. The bridge of stone behind the basin is the part that matters.
Bungalow kitchens are frequently extended into the rear or opened into the roof space, so the room is part original and part new build. Half-tiled walls are the pattern in these houses, and the tile line is what a splash return has to meet, which is settled before the top is drawn rather than after. Where the floor is solid, the unit sits where it is put.
The houses and blocks behind these jobs are 1930s semi, interwar chalet bungalow and postwar terrace. The run length that is easy in one is a join in another.
