Norbury kitchens

The kitchens we meet in Norbury

Edwardian terrace1930s semiflats above London Road shops1960s block

If stone worktop supply and fitting in Norbury is on your list this year, the useful starting point is not the colour but the shape of the room. Edwardian terraces near the station with rear-addition kitchens, and 1930s semis climbing the hill towards Norbury Park with larger square kitchens that take a proper island. Shop-top flats have minimal kitchens of 2m or less along one wall. None of it needs deciding today. The survey is where the guessing ends and the numbers start.

Party wall settlement pulls the floor down at one side of the room, so a long run reads level at one end and not at the other. Every slab in a yard began either as a block sawn off a quarry face or as a pressed powder fired in a kiln, and almost everything that follows from the choice comes out of that single difference. Heat tolerance is a property of the material, not a claim about it.

A long piece has to come through the front door, down the hall, round the newel post and through a doorway with a step down into the addition. Alcoves either side of the old breast chop the run into short lengths, and a kitchen made of short lengths is the case where buying a slab outright beats buying the square metres, because the remainder is paid for in both. Two slabs change the question from price to preference.

The stock behind these kitchens runs to Edwardian terrace, 1930s semi, flats above London Road shops and 1960s block. The one you have sets the piece length before the kitchen does.

True everywhere

Worktops, in short

  • Supply is £110 to £550 per square metre across the 181 surfaces we fit.
  • Granite comes out of the ground porous, which is why it gets sealed.
  • Dekton and sintered stone hold their colour under heat and direct sunlight.
  • That figure is the slab. Fabrication, edges, cut-outs and fitting are quoted separately.

The place

Why Norbury is its own job

The part of a Norbury job that goes wrong is almost never the stone, it is what nobody looked at first. London Road has red route restrictions through the day, so timing matters; the residential roads climbing east are steep with parking on both sides and short driveways. Anything on the London Road frontage has to be unloaded outside restricted hours, so we book those fits first thing rather than mid-morning. Everything above is looked at on the free design visit, and none of it is charged for until the template.

The work

What worktops involves

Quartz, granite and sintered surfaces such as Dekton are all supplied, and the choice between them is made on heat, sunlight, porosity and the light in the room rather than on price alone. The room is templated once the units are fixed and level, because the stone is machined to the room as built rather than to the kitchen drawing. You are left with joins that read as a shadow line, because the pieces either side come off adjoining slab and the resin is mixed to the stone.

The order of decisions matters: body, then gauge, then finish, then edge, then the apertures, because each one narrows what the next is allowed to be. A drainer grooved into the surface beside a sink is machined into the slab rather than added to it, and it suits a dense stone far better than a soft one. In a house of this age the kitchen stretches away from its only window, so the shortlist closes around a pale honed face before anybody names a colour. Machined to the millimetre and guaranteed by the decade, not the year.

The money

What it costs in Norbury

Edge work is charged along the length of every exposed face, which is why an island with four finished sides prices differently from a run with one. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. The stone itself is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only; everything done to it is priced separately and shown separately. The slab, then the machining, then the fitting, each on its own line.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The shape of the run

Both runs are in view at the same time, so the two pieces are taken off the same area of slab and the veining is set to run the same way on each side. A waterfall end is the most expensive detail per visible square metre in the trade, because the leg is a whole extra piece and the figure has to run down it uninterrupted. The island is usually the piece that opens the second slab.

What Norbury asks for

The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

Norbury in the housing figures

Around here new build has barely touched the stock, so we are fitting into existing kitchens rather than empty shells. Where homes are specified in bulk the yield question is answered across a whole scheme, and the waste factor falls once several rooms nest together. Movement needs a long unbroken length to be worth paying for.

Getting stone into a Norbury kitchen

London Road has red route restrictions through the day, so timing matters; the residential roads climbing east are steep with parking on both sides and short driveways.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Norbury

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Norbury on your patch?

Yes. Norbury is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW16. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Croydon. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. Whatever the standing allows, the stone leaves that van finished, because every edge, cut-out and internal radius is machined at the works and none of it is open to reconsideration at the kerb. Four quartz samples arrive by post, well before anything else does. Your part of it happens entirely at home, with nothing to travel to and nothing to bring back.

What should I expect from worktops in a Norbury kitchen?

The addition wall is half a brick thick in places and has usually had a damp course injected and been re-plastered, which leaves it neither flat nor consistent. The kitchen in one of these sits in the back addition and takes its daylight from one end, so the working half of the run is the darker half and a pale stone with a honed or matt face does more there than any colour with depth in it. The island earns the liveliest part of the stone. Plaster thickness varies over the height of a wall, so the line at worktop height is not the line at skirting level, and the units decide which one matters. Every notch and every scribe is machined into the piece before it leaves the works, and a hard sintered surface is the least forgiving of a tight internal corner, so one is always cut with a generous radius. Thirty millimetres bridges a gap that twenty millimetres will not.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Norbury?

The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. That caps the longest piece, and a run split into two lengths nests differently on the slab, which moves the yield and moves the figure with it. Where a break is unavoidable it goes into the quietest part of the pattern. A shared drive is only useful if the neighbour is not the one parked behind the van, so we ask which side the standing belongs to before the date is set. A granite kitchen ends its day with a sealer, and a sealer wants a dry face and a quiet hour afterwards, so that hour is written into the day rather than borrowed from it. Pieces are unloaded in laying order so the figure runs true.

Is Norbury really a worktops area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation. That is a point about the buildings round here, not about the job. The quoting, the cutting and the fitting are identical here to anywhere else we work. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Where several kitchens are ordered together the sensible move is to take them all off one batch, because two slabs of the same name bought six months apart will not sit happily in the same building. Buying for hard use is a different exercise from buying for looks. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. Volume work tends to live at the entry end of the range, and the entry end is genuine stone rather than a compromise, since the lowest supply figure we quote is a sintered surface and not a thin laminate pretending to be one. The remainder of a slab is bought whether it is fitted or not.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

A galley closed at one end takes a short return across the top, and that little piece carries the same edge work, the same handling and nearly the same cost as a full length. A shape like that nests kindly on a slab, so more of what gets bought ends up on the units and the rate per square metre behaves much as the brochure says it will. Depth beyond the standard is a slab question, not a trim question. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.

What state does a Norbury kitchen have to be in before you template?

Two walls each a degree out give an internal corner two degrees out, and the whole of that error lands in the mitre. A hob dropped into the middle of a length puts sustained warmth at the lip of a cut-out, and an engineered surface will yellow there across ten years where a natural one takes it without comment. A cranked piece eats more slab than the two straights it replaces. Send the run lengths, say where the sink and hob will sit, and tell us which way the room faces and what lighting is going in above the working run. Some doors in a building need a consent letter and some need nothing at all, so the first question is which arrangement applies here rather than which one is usual. That changes which questions are worth asking about the stone, because somebody staying put wants to know how a honed face marks in five years and somebody selling wants to know how it photographs next spring. Sealing is a job somebody has to want to do each year.

How do you cut out for an undermounted sink?

If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. A sit-on sink and an undermounted one are different cut-outs, so which it is gets settled before the template. Where the hob lands is set out against the units and the wall behind, not off the kitchen plan. Walls at both ends mean two scribes on every piece, and a run that has to drop between two fixed points has no tolerance left to give away. An island is the piece that decides whether one slab covers the kitchen or two, and a second slab arrives as a step in the figure rather than a gentle slope. Where the shape is broken, a repeating pattern is worth money.

Which materials need sealing and which do not?

Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Sealing is the one maintenance job that genuinely differs by material, and it is worth knowing which you are buying before the slab is chosen. No maintenance visit is built into the job. Soap, water, and on the porous stones a seal. Where the side return has been filled in, the old external wall is now an internal one and still carries its render, its gutter line and its old fixings. Rooms in these houses run long and narrow with the only honest daylight at the garden end, so a pale honed surface does more for the working half of the kitchen than any colour with depth in it. At four metres a stone is a tone rather than a pattern.

What if the base units are out of level?

A long top on units that were shimmed once and never checked is the commonest version of this, and it is cheap to fix beforehand. If the carcasses are corrected, the template is taken again, since a drawing off units that then moved is worthless. Units have to be fixed down as well as levelled. A loose carcass moves under stone. A scribe has a working limit, and past twenty millimetres or so the back edge starts eating depth the run cannot spare. A run that sits under strong sun for hours every afternoon suits a surface built to be stable in daylight, because a resin-bound stone is made for indoor use and sustained sunlight is the one thing it was never designed around. Short lengths are where a full slab starts to pay for itself.

Do you quote Norbury jobs by the square metre?

The design and quotation visit is free and carries no obligation, so a figure exists before any commitment. What moves the figure after templating is a change you make: a different edge, an extra cut-out, a bigger sink chosen late. The edge profile is its own line, so a shaped edge and a square one are two different figures. Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. A deep scribe eats into the back of the piece, which is quietly important on a stone with directional figure, since the pattern moves backwards as that depth comes off. The narrowest return in the kitchen is its weakest stone.
