The housing stock
What we are usually working with in South Kensington
Gas, waste and later wiring were boxed in against the wall long after the house was built, and that boxing is what the run has to clear. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. Dust extraction indoors, or the cut happens outside.
Under-pavement vaults and cellar lids look solid and are not - never set an A-frame down on the flags in front of these houses without seeing what is underneath. Cromwell Road and the museum roads are heavily restricted, and the residents' bays fill early, so an early morning slot is worth having. Most of it is listed or in conservation area with pavement vaults, so you cannot stack slabs on the flags outside without checking the vault below, and the front area steps down to the basement door are the usual route in.
Edwardian terraces are wider and taller than the Victorian houses next to them, so the kitchen usually takes a full-width rear room rather than a narrow outrigger. The units are levelled and packed before a top goes near them, because a settled floor shows immediately in a long straight edge. A floor that falls twenty millimetres is packed out first.
Most of what we quote on here is 1840s-50s stucco crescent and terrace, Italianate garden square house, Victorian mansion block and embassy-scale townhouse. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
There is nothing to visit in South Kensington. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
