The housing stock
What we are usually working with in Streatham
Doorways are 762mm at best, and the turn from the hall into the kitchen is the pinch point rather than the front door. Taking the old tops off is also the first honest look at what has been going on underneath them. A sound carcass takes stone; a soft one gets replaced first.
Above-shop kitchens here sit on old timber floors that slope towards the front of the building, so level off the units and pack rather than following the floor.
Rear access over a flat roof or up an external stair exists in some of these, and it is worth checking before the front stair is assumed. Where the run is short enough to go in one piece, the replacement often has fewer joins than the top coming out. A replacement is measured against the walls as they are now.
The buildings themselves are mostly Edwardian terrace, Victorian terrace, Above-shop flat, 1930s semi and Postwar block. The run length that is easy in one is a join in another.
Access. The high road is a red route with bus lanes and constant traffic, and above-shop flats are reached through a shared door and a straight steep stair with no landing to rest on. Residential side streets are permit-controlled but usually workable outside peak hours.
There is nothing to visit in Streatham. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
