We do not price vanity tops in Telegraph Hill without seeing the kitchen first, and the reason for that is in the rooms themselves. Tall Victorian villas on a steep hill, most converted into flats. Garden-level flats have kitchens in the old lower ground with low ceilings and a lightwell, and the upper flats have kitchens in the return with a window at one end and no straight run beyond 3m. Either way, the next step is the same one: get someone out to look, and get the measurements written down.
A curved bay or a canted corner turns up more often here than people expect, and a curve is templated and cut, never bent. The fittings come from four suppliers and arrive in no particular order, so the surface is drawn last and asked to reconcile all of them. It is the smallest piece we cut and the most crowded.
A large villa has wide doors, a generous hall and somewhere to park, so the joins that go in are chosen for layout rather than forced by the route. Long uninterrupted walls mean a vanity can run further than the unit beneath it, and any unsupported length is settled at the drawing stage. A large bathroom is where a double vanity becomes possible.
The stock behind these kitchens runs to 1870s-1890s Victorian villa, Victorian terrace and conservation-area flat conversion. Which one you have changes the order of the day more than the design does.
