Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. A full-height piece behind the hob has to allow for the extractor, so that gets settled first. Stone up a wall is heavier than tile and bonded rather than hung, so the wall has to be sound. The kitchen is a narrow room off the hall with the window at the far end, so the run is a galley by construction rather than by choice. Windows are generous here and the light is even, so a mid-tone holds up without having to be pale simply to survive the room. Warm stone beside painted timber, cool grey rarely.

A run that sits under strong sun for hours every afternoon suits a surface built to be stable in daylight, because a resin-bound stone is made for indoor use and sustained sunlight is the one thing it was never designed around.
