One kitchen in Finsbury Park might take a single run along a back wall and the next an island as well, which is why bathroom worktop fitting is never quoted blind. Dominated by terraces converted into two or three flats, so the typical job is a small kitchen in a rear addition or a former bedroom at 2.4-3m, with a wall-hung boiler sitting directly over the run. Ground-floor and garden flats get a little more room and occasionally a short peninsula. The point of the visit is that you stop guessing and get a number you can hold us to.
Where the walls have been dry-lined over the old lath there is a void behind the board and no solid fixing until a batten is found. For a vanity the length is rarely the argument, because it is the depth and what has to be drilled through it that set the piece. Basin, tap holes and splash return inside a few hundred millimetres.
Boxed sash frames swallow a hundred millimetres of wall on each side of the opening, so the wall between a window and a corner is shorter than a plan makes it look. Pipework in these houses runs on the surface and gets boxed in, and a top that has to notch round a boxing loses depth in the one direction it cannot spare. Old pipework is boxed rather than moved, and the top notches round it.
The kitchens here sit in Victorian terrace, Edwardian terrace, conversion flat and post-war block. None of them is harder than the others; they are awkward in different ways.
