Grange Park kitchens

The kitchens we meet in Grange Park

Most of the worktop jobs we do in Grange Park land in one of a few kinds of kitchen, and which one you have changes the job long before the stone is ordered. Big interwar detached houses on wide plots, so the kitchen is usually a full remodel rather than a swap - island with a waterfall end, integrated boiling tap, and a separate utility behind. Runs of 4m and over are normal and clients ask about bookmatching. You will get a firm figure for your Grange Park kitchen once it has been templated, and that figure does not move afterwards.

The consumer unit and the meter often sit high on the wall at one end of the kitchen, and neither of them is going to move to suit a run of stone. Water settles more than taste does: how much a body absorbs, and how quickly, decides whether sealing becomes part of your year. Priced by the square metre, lived with by the square inch.

The kitchen sits on the far side of the hall from the front door, so even with easy access outside there is still a turn to make inside. These rooms take good side light from the garden, which flatters a stone with movement in it and is largely wasted on a flat single colour. True walls and standard carcasses give the best yield there is.

What the surveys keep coming back to is 1920s detached, 1930s detached and mock-Tudor semi. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

Worktops, in short

  • Supply is £110 to £550 per square metre across the 181 surfaces we fit.
  • Dekton and sintered stone hold their colour under heat and direct sunlight.
  • That figure is the slab. Fabrication, edges, cut-outs and fitting are quoted separately.
  • Four free quartz samples are posted out, because photographs of stone lie.

The place

Why Grange Park is its own job

We are in Grange Park most weeks, and it is the building rather than the stone that decides how a job here runs. Private-feeling roads with in-and-out drives and long front paths, so the van parks fine but the carry from kerb to kitchen can be 25m over gravel. Some properties have gates that need opening in advance. Waterfall ends and mitred edges are the norm here, which means the fabrication tolerance matters more than the fitting - get accurate cabinet dimensions at template rather than trusting the plan. Both go on the drawing, and the drawing is what the workshop cuts to.

The work

What worktops involves

The material carries a twenty five year guarantee and the fitting workmanship five years, and both are handed over in writing with the paperwork for the slab. The room is templated once the units are fixed and level, because the stone is machined to the room as built rather than to the kitchen drawing. You get an itemised figure that shows what the slab cost, what the edges cost and what the openings cost, so the layout can be adjusted before anything is cut.

The order of decisions matters: body, then gauge, then finish, then edge, then the apertures, because each one narrows what the next is allowed to be. Granite runs £121 to £550 across 45 of them, and the spread inside that band is about rarity of the colour far more than about performance. These kitchens are read from the dining half of the room as well as the working half, so continuity of figure across the pieces matters more than it would in a closed room. The slab is quoted; the cut list is what you pay.

The money

What it costs in Grange Park

The rate per square metre buys stone and nothing else, so the machining, the openings, the polished edges and the fitting are set out beside it rather than folded into it. Overhangs, a waterfall end and seating all add machining, and an island is where those decisions cluster. The spread from £110 to £550 per square metre is the width of the catalogue rather than vagueness about price, and where you land in it is a decision about material. You see what the offcut costs before you agree to the layout.

period detached houses and villas

The carry, and what it rules out

A gate post set narrower than the opening looks generous from the road and stops a wide piece a metre in. Resin filled fissures in a natural slab are inspected in daylight at the works and never under a street lamp, since that is the only honest way to see them. Stone arrives finished, because a kerb is not a polishing shop.

What Grange Park asks for

The stock here does not generate much of this. What it generates is worktop fabrication and worktop installation. The job itself is surveyed, quoted and fitted exactly as it would be anywhere else we work.

period detached houses and villas

Grange Park in the housing figures

In Grange Park, the stock is mostly in the hands of the people living in it. Stone is a fixture, so it outlives the agreement over the room, and the paperwork matters to whoever holds the keys later. The remainder of a slab is the quiet line on every quotation.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Grange Park

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

01

Is Grange Park on your patch?

Yes. Grange Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are N21. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Enfield. Overhanging branches clear the roof of a car and catch the roof of a van, so the drive is looked at from the driver seat rather than from the doorstep. Whatever the standing allows, the stone leaves that van finished, because every edge, cut-out and internal radius is machined at the works and none of it is open to reconsideration at the kerb. A natural surface is sealed at the end of its own fitting day. Template and fit both happen at the property, so there is nothing to drive to and nothing to collect.

02

Does the housing in Grange Park change how worktops works?

These were built with a separate dining room, and most have had the wall between it and the kitchen taken out with a steel put in above. These kitchens are usually knocked through to the dining room, so the surface is read from two sides at once and the figure has to carry across the pieces rather than restart at every join. A galley nests efficiently and frees money for better stone. Plaster thickness varies over the height of a wall, so the line at worktop height is not the line at skirting level, and the units decide which one matters. A hob dropped into the middle of a length puts sustained warmth at the lip of a cut-out, and an engineered surface will yellow there across ten years where a natural one takes it without comment. A tight inside corner is where brittle material gives up.

03

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Grange Park?

Every internal doorway on the way through is another frame to clear, and internal doors come off their hinges rather than being propped open. That caps the longest piece, and a run split into two lengths nests differently on the slab, which moves the yield and moves the figure with it. Quiet stone closes a joint; dramatic stone announces it. On a drive that only takes one vehicle nose-in, the van has to reverse the whole length of it to get back out, which decides which way it goes in. A granite kitchen ends its day with a sealer, and a sealer wants a dry face and a quiet hour afterwards, so that hour is written into the day rather than borrowed from it. Dust from a sintered slab belongs at the works, not on a street.

04

Would you call Grange Park a worktops area?

Not particularly. It would be easy to say yes and leave it there. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop fabrication and worktop installation. That is about what people have here rather than how it gets done. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Where several kitchens are ordered together the sensible move is to take them all off one batch, because two slabs of the same name bought six months apart will not sit happily in the same building. Movement across three metres is not visible on a hand sample. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. Volume work tends to live at the entry end of the range, and the entry end is genuine stone rather than a compromise, since the lowest supply figure we quote is a sintered surface and not a thin laminate pretending to be one. A repeated specification is worth deciding slowly, once.

05

What am I actually paying for, line by line?

A downdraught extractor takes a long slot out of the middle of the piece and a motor housing out of the cabinet below it, so what sits under the top is settled before anything is cut. A shape like that nests kindly on a slab, so more of what gets bought ends up on the units and the rate per square metre behaves much as the brochure says it will. The number follows the layout far more closely than the floor plan. Reckon on £110 to £550 per square metre for the material supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting itemised separately.

06

Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Grange Park?

Two walls each a degree out give an internal corner two degrees out, and the whole of that error lands in the mitre. A run that sits under strong sun for hours every afternoon suits a surface built to be stable in daylight, because a resin-bound stone is made for indoor use and sustained sunlight is the one thing it was never designed around. The wall decides the scribe and the scribe decides the depth. Confirm the depth of the units, the total run lengths and whether an island or peninsula is going in, and tell us the colour temperature of the lighting. The decision usually gets made standing in the room rather than at a desk, which is why a slab is worth viewing whole instead of choosing from a sample card. That changes which questions are worth asking about the stone, because somebody staying put wants to know how a honed face marks in five years and somebody selling wants to know how it photographs next spring. The middle band is where most fitted surfaces honestly sit.

07

What if the base units are out of level?

The check comes before the measuring rather than after, because the whole drawing is set out from that plane. Where a run meets an appliance, level decides whether that appliance door still clears the stone above it. Stone does not flex, so a run that rocks on its carcasses rocks just as badly once it is stone. A scribe has a working limit, and past twenty millimetres or so the back edge starts eating depth the run cannot spare. A deep scribe eats into the back of the piece, which is quietly important on a stone with directional figure, since the pattern moves backwards as that depth comes off. Sealing suits stone that drinks; nothing else needs it.

08

What happens if a piece is damaged on the fitting day?

Most breakages happen on the carry, which is why the route is walked and measured before anything comes off the van. Door frames and the stair route are protected too, since most contact happens on the way in. Our own installers do the carry, so there is nobody in the middle to argue with about it. A pendant light hanging in the middle of a hall ceiling sets the angle a piece can be tilted to, and it is the measurement nobody thinks to take. Where a seam becomes unavoidable the choice of stone starts to matter, because a fine even speckle closes a joint almost invisibly and a broad vein simply will not. Thin sintered stone weighs about half what thick granite does.

09

What happens once you have templated in Grange Park?

The fit follows 5 to 10 working days after the template, and nothing is cut before that visit because nothing is cut from a plan. If the units run late the template moves, not the fit: the gap between them is fabrication. The design and quotation visit comes first. It is free and carries no obligation. The plaster is a thick float and set over brick that has blown in patches, so a wall sounds solid in one place and hollow a hand-span away. Which stone belongs on top of all that is a separate question from the building itself, and it is the one with a figure attached, because supply alone runs from £110 to £550 per square metre before a single cut has been made. A finish is a decision about cleaning as much as about looks.

10

Can the sink be undermounted rather than sat on top?

A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. We seat and seal the sink and hob on the day; water, waste, gas and electrics are for your plumber and electrician. A tap under a window board still needs room for its handle to lift, which is checked at the template. Power and waste come up through the floor, and where they surface decides which cabinet can hold a sink and which one cannot. An island is the piece that decides whether one slab covers the kitchen or two, and a second slab arrives as a step in the figure rather than a gentle slope. A clean nest on the slab is the cheapest thing a shape can do.
