Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. Confirm the depth of the units, the total run lengths and whether an island or peninsula is going in, and tell us the colour temperature of the lighting. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. That changes which questions are worth asking about the stone, because somebody staying put wants to know how a honed face marks in five years and somebody selling wants to know how it photographs next spring. A chip in natural stone can be filled and polished in place.

Doorways, the newel post and the handrail usually take the room away, rather than the stairs themselves. The unused stone rides back unless you want it, and a granite remnant makes a chopping board, a hearth or a window board instead of becoming waste. Wet stone reads darker, which is why colour is judged indoors.

Grooves are machined in the workshop at the same time as the bowl cut-out, because they cannot be done well in a kitchen. The bowl position has to be settled before templating, since the grooves are set out from it. The alternative stands on the surface, so the choice is losing worktop permanently or only while you are draining. A serving hatch through to the dining room is common, and closing one up leaves a panel of newer wall exactly where the run passes. Which stone belongs on top of all that is a separate question from the building itself, and it is the one with a figure attached, because supply alone runs from £110 to £550 per square metre before a single cut has been made. Stone cannot be filled and made good the way laminate can, so a damaged piece is remade rather than patched. Chips at an edge or a corner are the usual form, because that is where stone is least supported. The rest of the kitchen still goes in. One damaged piece does not hold up the pieces either side. Where the garden is level and the back door is wide the pieces get staged outside on trestles and brought in one at a time as the fitters are ready for them. Sintered stone at twelve millimetres weighs roughly half what thirty millimetre granite weighs, so a punishing route can genuinely rule one material in and another out. Speckle forgives a joint that a sweeping figure never would.
