Morden Park kitchens

The kitchens we meet in Morden Park

1930s semi1950s council-built housePostwar bungalow

If you have had one quote for stone worktop supply and fitting in Morden Park and it did not match the next one, the difference is usually sitting in the room itself. Garage and side-return infills are the common upgrade rather than large rear extensions, producing a long thin kitchen with cabinets down one side and appliances at the cold end. Utility runs off the kitchen are frequently specified in the same material. We would rather find an out of square wall at survey than on fitting day, so the survey is thorough and unhurried.

Sash windows sit low in the rear wall, and the sill often lands below the height a worktop wants to run past. Water settles more than taste does: how much a body absorbs, and how quickly, decides whether sealing becomes part of your year. Veining is a question of scale, and a postcard has no scale.

The addition is one room wide, so the run is a galley with a door at one end and a window at the other and no wall long enough for anything else. A matt or honed face suits a period room better than a mirror polish, and it is also the finish that hides the fine dust an old house produces all year round. Save on the colour before you save on the thickness.

On this patch the buildings are 1930s semi, 1950s council-built house and Postwar bungalow. They were built to different tolerances, and the stone has to absorb that.

True everywhere

Worktops, in short

  • Supply is £110 to £550 per square metre across the 181 surfaces we fit.
  • Granite comes out of the ground porous, which is why it gets sealed.
  • Dekton and sintered stone hold their colour under heat and direct sunlight.
  • That figure is the slab. Fabrication, edges, cut-outs and fitting are quoted separately.

The place

Why Morden Park is its own job

The questions we ask about a job in Morden Park are about the route, the doorways and the walls, not about the finish. Off-street parking is normal and roads are wide, so the van gets to the door. The pinch point is the side passage into an infill extension, which is often built out to within 700mm of the boundary fence. Infill extensions are frequently narrower than a standard worktop plus walkway, so confirm the finished internal width before ordering, 600mm depth plus an island is not always possible. The template is where the room stops being a drawing and starts being measurements, and the price follows the measurements.

The work

What worktops involves

The material carries a twenty five year guarantee and the fitting workmanship five years, and both are handed over in writing with the paperwork for the slab. The pieces are cut and polished at the works with radiused internal corners at every opening, so nothing is machined into a finished surface inside your house. You end up with a surface chosen for how it behaves in your room rather than for how it looked on a screen, which is a different decision and usually a better one.

Granite is quarried, which makes every slab its own object. It will take a pan straight off the flame, and being porous it asks for sealing now and then. Acid is what marks a calcite based surface. Citrus, wine and descaler will etch marble and several limestones, and no sealer on sale prevents that. Painted period joinery and tall ceilings carry a thicker front edge comfortably, and a slim one tends to look apologetic beside them. Heat, water and sunlight sort the shortlist quickly.

The money

What it costs in Morden Park

Material band is the single largest lever on the total, and moving up a band on a small kitchen costs less than most people assume because there is little area to multiply. The island is normally the largest single piece in the kitchen, which makes it the piece that sets the carry and sometimes the price. Multiplying your worktop area by something between £110 and £550 gives you a material bill rather than a job cost, and the two are far enough apart to be worth keeping separate. Finished edges are counted by the metre, not by the surface.

1930s and inter-war semis

Morden Park in the housing figures

Around Morden Park, bay-fronted inter-war housing sets the pattern. Where homes are compact the total area is small, so the band of stone moves the bill more than the metreage does. Opening a second slab is a jump, and extra length is only a gentle climb.

What Morden Park asks for

Residents are given written notice before anyone attends, and that notice period rather than the workshop is what governs the earliest sensible start. Where a cleaner reaches for whatever sits under the sink, abrasion and acid do the choosing, and a fired body survives both without anybody being briefed. Whoever holds the keys later is the one who needs the paperwork.

The stock here does not generate much of this. What it generates is worktop installation and worktop replacement. The job itself is surveyed, quoted and fitted exactly as it would be anywhere else we work.

Getting stone into a Morden Park kitchen

Off-street parking is normal and roads are wide, so the van gets to the door. The pinch point is the side passage into an infill extension, which is often built out to within 700mm of the boundary fence.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Morden Park

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Morden Park, or just list it?

Yes. Morden Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SM4. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Merton. Where a car has to come off the drive first, it is worth knowing whose car it is and whether the keys are in the house on the morning. Whatever the standing allows, the stone leaves that van finished, because every edge, cut-out and internal radius is machined at the works and none of it is open to reconsideration at the kerb. The film stays on the face until the last trade leaves. The template happens in your kitchen and so does the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Is there anything about Morden Park buildings that catches worktops out?

The step down from the main house into the addition is commonly a hundred to a hundred and fifty millimetres, which gives the kitchen a different floor datum from the rest of the ground floor. The kitchen in one of these sits in the back addition and takes its daylight from one end, so the working half of the run is the darker half and a pale stone with a honed or matt face does more there than any colour with depth in it. Two slabs change the question from price to preference. The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Every notch and every scribe is machined into the piece before it leaves the works, and a hard sintered surface is the least forgiving of a tight internal corner, so one is always cut with a generous radius. A deep scribe moves the pattern back along with the depth.

What do you check about the route into a Morden Park property?

Grass and gravel will not take a loaded trolley, so a boarded track gets laid from the gate to the door before the first piece moves. That caps the longest piece, and a run split into two lengths nests differently on the slab, which moves the yield and moves the figure with it. Yield drops the moment the building dictates awkward lengths. A gate post set narrower than the opening looks generous from the road and stops a wide piece a metre in. A granite kitchen ends its day with a sealer, and a sealer wants a dry face and a quiet hour afterwards, so that hour is written into the day rather than borrowed from it. Four quartz samples arrive by post, well before anything else does.

Is Morden Park really a worktops area?

Not really, and claiming otherwise would cost nothing and mean nothing. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation and worktop replacement. It reflects the local housing rather than any difference in the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted here the same way it is anywhere else on the patch. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Where several kitchens are ordered together the sensible move is to take them all off one batch, because two slabs of the same name bought six months apart will not sit happily in the same building. Two slabs bought a season apart are two different stones. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Volume work tends to live at the entry end of the range, and the entry end is genuine stone rather than a compromise, since the lowest supply figure we quote is a sintered surface and not a thin laminate pretending to be one. Buying for hard use is a different exercise from buying for looks.

Why do two Morden Park kitchens the same size price differently?

It is walked round rather than looked at from one side, so the direction the veining runs along it cannot be hidden against a wall the way it can on a perimeter run. A shape like that nests kindly on a slab, so more of what gets bought ends up on the units and the rate per square metre behaves much as the brochure says it will. Finished ends cost by the metre, however short the run is. Supply only, material is £110 to £550 per square metre, with templating, fabrication and fitting quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A room can be out of square in both directions at once, so the wall that leans is also the wall that runs downhill, and one scribe cannot answer both. A run that sits under strong sun for hours every afternoon suits a surface built to be stable in daylight, because a resin-bound stone is made for indoor use and sustained sunlight is the one thing it was never designed around. Thirty millimetres bridges a gap that twenty millimetres will not. Send the run lengths, say where the sink and hob will sit, and tell us which way the room faces and what lighting is going in above the working run. A leaseholder paying for their own kitchen inside managed stock still needs the freeholder to consent, and that consent is about the building and the common parts rather than about the worktop. That changes which questions are worth asking about the stone, because somebody staying put wants to know how a honed face marks in five years and somebody selling wants to know how it photographs next spring. Buy once where the room will not be touched again for years.

Do you cut drainer grooves on Morden Park kitchens?

The alternative stands on the surface, so the choice is losing worktop permanently or only while you are draining. The grooves sit inside the depth of the top with stone left either side, so a shallow run limits them. They are cut with a fall towards the bowl, which is why they cannot be added on site later. The side return was an outside toilet and a coal store before it was ever a kitchen, and the walls left over from that are half a brick thick. Which stone belongs on top of all that is a separate question from the building itself, and it is the one with a figure attached, because supply alone runs from £110 to £550 per square metre before a single cut has been made. Heat tolerance is a property of the material, not a claim about it.

Is the quote a fixed price or an estimate?

What moves the figure after templating is a change you make: a different edge, an extra cut-out, a bigger sink chosen late. Ask for the lines rather than the total. One number for a kitchen tells you nothing you can check. No installed price per square metre is published, because it is not a real number. Plaster thickness varies over the height of a wall, so the line at worktop height is not the line at skirting level, and the units decide which one matters. A deep scribe eats into the back of the piece, which is quietly important on a stone with directional figure, since the pattern moves backwards as that depth comes off. A cranked piece eats more slab than the two straights it replaces.

Do you take the old worktop away?

Disposal means it goes in the van, not into the garden to wait for a collection. Tiling bonded to the wall behind usually comes away with the old top, so that wall is agreed beforehand. What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. Overhanging branches clear the roof of a car and catch the roof of a van, so the drive is looked at from the driver seat rather than from the doorstep. Sintered surfaces are the hardest of the three to machine and the messiest to cut wet, which is precisely why none of that happens on a public pavement. Pieces are unloaded in laying order so the figure runs true.

Is one material less trouble than another for a Morden Park kitchen?

Where a top takes wine, oil and lemon most days, the non-porous materials ask least of the household. Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Sealing is the one maintenance job that genuinely differs by material, and it is worth knowing which you are buying before the slab is chosen. Where the addition is single storey the ceiling follows a lean-to roof, so one side of the room loses height and a full-height panel has a sloping stop. Alcoves either side of the old breast chop the run into short lengths, and a kitchen made of short lengths is the case where buying a slab outright beats buying the square metres, because the remainder is paid for in both. Movement needs length, and length is what these rooms have.
