That is the local housing talking rather than anything about the job. It is priced, cut and fitted no differently here than anywhere else we cover. Where several kitchens are ordered together the sensible move is to take them all off one batch, because two slabs of the same name bought six months apart will not sit happily in the same building. A deep scribe comes out of the nest, so how far the stone has to be relieved changes which part of the slab the piece is cut from. A hob dropped into the middle of a length puts sustained warmth at the lip of a cut-out, and an engineered surface will yellow there across ten years where a natural one takes it without comment. Strong daylight is an argument for a surface built to take it. Because the money comes out of a household rather than a maintenance budget, phasing is common: tops now, island or splashbacks later, quoted so the second visit still matches the first. That changes which questions are worth asking about the stone, because somebody staying put wants to know how a honed face marks in five years and somebody selling wants to know how it photographs next spring. One stone across a portfolio is worth more than a small saving.

The tap hole is drilled in the workshop too, and its position depends on how far the tap has to swing. Sinks, taps and hobs are yours to buy in any case, and they only have to be in the room for the template. Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. Thickness has to be known before quoting, since it decides the edge, the cut-outs and what the units carry. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Quartz is the sensible default where a kitchen changes hands often, because there is nothing to seal, nothing to re-seal and nothing an incoming household has to be told about the surface. A focal surface deserves to be seen at full size.

Both are templated after the worktop is down and settled, because they are cut to the wall itself. A full-height piece behind the hob has to allow for the extractor, so that gets settled first. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because the openings are machined rather than chopped out on the wall.
